Four walls can change everything

Talent is everywhere - opportunity is not.

One of the barriers to education in Africa can be as basic as having a place to learn. There are teachers and children who want to learn. Sometimes what's missing is the room to do it.

The BAS mission is to address that problem.

How we work

FUND IT

$80,000 will build a permanent, four-classroom school. ThIs funding covers materials, labor, and handoff. Virtually every cent goes to construction.

BUILD IT

Our Kenya team secures the land, acquires materials, organizes the construction crew, breaks ground and within twelve weeks the school is completed. We use local labor which helps the economy of the villages where we build.

HAND IT OVER

Once complete and with support from the Ministry of Education, the community Board of Management takes on the responsibility and the ongoing management of the school.

Our Schools

Every BAS school is built to last. A permanent stone brick construction. Construction is done by an experienced crew that has worked on the majority of our schools over the past twenty years. These schools still stand as a testament to the quality of their work and continue to places of learning for thousands of students every year.

Serena Williams — Connect to the World

Stories behind the schools

In 2007 and 2010, Serena Williams partnered with Hewlett-Packard and Build African Schools to fund and open two secondary schools in rural Kenya: the Matooni Serena Williams Secondary School and the Wee Serena Williams Secondary School. Both schools are fully integrated into Kenya's national education system and remain open today.

Serena attended the opening of the Wee school in person, met students and community members in the village. In this video, in this video, she speaks about what connecting children to education means.

School 18 is now under construction

Kithatha secondary school, Makueni County, Kenya

The project is fully funded and underway right now. In Kithatha, Makueni County, a community that has never had a permanent secondary school is about to get one. This school will be built to last and open to children for generations.

Twelve weeks from now, the doors open.

School 19 is next. Your donation will help make it happen.
